Strawberries

Strawberries contain malic acid which helps remove surface stains on your teeth. Malic acid is found in other fruits too, like apples and has numerous health benefits. Often times teeth whitening products will use malic acid as an ingredient. The vitamin C in strawberries acts as a teeth whitener by assisting in the removal of plaque.

Strawberry whitening recipe from Michelle Phan

Ingredients:

1 strawberry
½ tablespoon baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Crush the strawberry to a pulpy consistency
  2. Add in baking soda until blended
  3. Use a soft toothbrush to spread the mixture onto your teeth
  4. Leave on for 3-5 minutes
  5. Rinse and brush thoroughly with toothpaste
  6. Floss out any stray strawberry seeds

Michelle also recommends to do this no more than once a week.

Their crunchy texture acts as a toothbrush and removes food and bacteria from your teeth while also scrubbing out the stains. It’s no secret that apples are full of vitamins and have several health benefits. According to an article at the mother nature network, apples could actually help reduce the risk of respiratory diseases like asthma, and they may even promote heart health. So clean your teeth and eat healthy!

Baking Soda
A Safe Teeth Whitening Ingredient

Baking soda neutralizes acids that are produced in plaque, as well as being a very mild abrasive, scrubbing away stains and buildup on your teeth. You can even mix baking soda with different ingredients to create your own natural toothpaste, if you desired.

Ingredients:

Baking Soda
Lemon

Instructions:

  1. Use a small bowl to mix up a small amount of baking soda with fresh squeezed lemon juice. The mix should bubble a little.
  2. Use a cotton swab to wipe off saliva and plaque from your teeth before brushing on the mix. 3. Leave it on your teeth for one minute before gently brushing it off with a toothbrush.

Note: Don’t leave the mix on your teeth for any longer than a minute because the acid can erode tooth enamel.

Coconut
Preventing Tooth Decay

A study was done at the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland which showed that coconut oil could fight tooth decay. The study showed that when coconut oil was mixed with enzymes, it stopped the growth of major tooth-decaying bacteria. Coconut oil is often used in homemade tooth pastes for this reason. It is even used sometimes by itself for cleaning the mouth in a practice called oil-pulling.

Coconut Oil Toothpaste from Lori Klein

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
2 tablespoons Baking Soda
10 drops of Peppermint oil (this is optional)

Instructions:

  1. Mix baking soda and coconut oil in a small container. Keep going until it forms a paste like consistency.
  2. Add several drops of peppermint oil and mix (this is optional).

Note: Coconut Oil could potentially clog the pipes of your house. Rather than spitting in your sink, you can use a plastic bag that you can throw away afterwards.
